Development tasks of children age 1-7 is to navigate through sense of autonomy, willpower, self-control, and develop initiative. Development tasks of adolescents age 9-13 is to develop cultural values, develop sense of identity, competency and belonging. Any disruption in stages of life can lead to inability to self-regulate, problem solve or manage stress, or relate to self or others.

Children express themselves through play and creativity when they are healthy as well as when they are in distress.

 

Signs that your child is healthy may include:

  • Imaginative Play
  • Actively uses creativity in singular activity
  • Plays well with others
  • Plays independently for period of time
  • Seeks out trusted figures for support/soothing
  • Easily engages with peers or adults

Signs that your child is in distress may include:

  • Bedwetting
  • Nightmares/Night terrors
  • Irritability
  • Psychomotor Agitation
  • Hitting/Fighting/Aggression
  • Excessive Crying/Screaming
  • Difficulty following directions
  • Difficulty with self soothe
  • Poor Peer relations
  • Academic problems
